Do NOT visit to swim in our beautiful river and lake, do NOT let your dogs run along the shore, do NOT let kids in the water at the beaches.
Unfortunately, our District 4 Supervisor, Don Martin, refused to arrange for warning signs at South Cove.
In winter, the shores look a lot cleaner, but as soon as the water warms up, the algae thrive.
My favorite spot to take visitors was Pierce Ferry, but this summer the beach has been covered with a white substance. And I recently learned that all river runners’ PEE goes in the river.
I thought that the NPS would have septic stations throughout the Grand Canyon, but, in the river it goes. Feeding the TOXIC algae.
According to a 2024 study, fish have degraded DNA and low-quality sperm. So many toxins and PFAS.
Where the Las Vegas “treated” sewage enters Lake Mead:
The water in this area contains contaminants found in runoff from urban areas and treated sewage
HUMAN CONTACT NOT RECOMMENDED.
While the “treated” sewage is on the other side of the lake, I certainly would never eat fish from Lake Mead. In fact, in my 26 years near Meadview, I have never eaten Lake Mead fish. What little I read about water quality made me lose my appetite.
The Las Vegas population’s sewage and industrial waste have tripled since the 90s while Lake Mead is at an all-time low, concentrating toxins.
Downstream from Hoover Dam the water quality is so bad, I’ve seen a comment on FB stating that they can SMELL the “outhouse” odor when lots of water is released at Hoover Dam in the afternoon.
From there, it goes into Lake Mohave, prime TOXIC algae water with so many “nutrients.”
Lake Havasu must be the worst. The further downriver you go, the more pollution in the water.
ALL fish died in San Carlos Reservoir (Rio Grande, SE Arizona) in June 2026, and the lake is closed.

The Rio Grande is in the exact same situation as the Colorado, with water rights and pollution. So this is what we have to look forward to if the Bureau of Reclamation does not stop using water from other upriver reservoirs to maintain Lake Powell.
Every gallon stolen from these reservoirs is WASTED. Lake Powell loses so much water to evaporation and the porous ground, and it PREHEATS the water for the TOXIC algae and other bacteria in Lake Mead.
It’s insane.

Utah lobbied the administration to do what it takes to maintain Lake Powell for tourist $$$.
In my research, I found that just about all lakes and rivers in the US are tremendously polluted.
If you and your kids and dogs like to play in the water, I highly recommend finding cleaner water, possibly head for the ocean.
I’ve seen so many warnings and closed beaches at the ocean, too. It’s a sad state of the planet.
